Higher ladder

Higher ladder.
|
Whenever I hear your name
I feel a pang of jealousy
And then I stop to think:
Whatever for? -- you are not mine
You never were, and now never will be
I fell for you;
You climbed to a higher ladder
And looked down at me with cold eyes
Was it your fault? -- of course not
Was it mine? -- not really
It's just the way it happened
Seeing you across the table
My cat asleep on your lap
Your head on your hands, smiling ...
How could I not have fallen
And you, looking into my eyes, seeing
All that I have been or ever could be
And deciding
That I was not the one for you
